Does magnetic interference actually lead to fly always?

You always read the horror stories online about a magnetic interference warning leading to loss of control, but further investigating usually reveals that the drone simply switched to atti mode and the operators lack of experience without gps lock leads to a crash/flyaway. But are there any instances where a magnetic interference actually results in unauthorized movement of the drone? I’ve seen conflicting information on if the compass is even active in atti mode, but dji literature doesn’t really shed light on this.
