Do you legally have to keep your drone in sight to use it??

I'm new to drone flying so I'm not very caught up on the rules - but I read today that FAA rules state you must keep your drone in direct line of sight.Is this true? What's the point of having the Mavic Air 2 with a theoretical maximum range of 11 miles if you can only fly within a few hundred meters of yourself.If this is true, does anyone actually follow this rule?
